Many students who have e-lectures should follow the course via the e-campus website. However, students are suffering from log-in errors. Therefore they have complained about this problem to the postscript section of website and application. That is why their attendances are not acknowledged. In fact, two years ago, the same problem existed. Because of recent problems in KU’s online service (KU portal problem) and previous e-campus problems, students are insisting Konkuk improve their online service by posting on the Q&A page in KU website. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Konkuk, the Way to Globalization KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Improper Measures Aggravated the Problems Caused by Sexual Harassment This March, there was a sexual harassment at the MT of Department of Civil Engineering. Three male students applied toothpaste to the body of a sleeping male freshman student after stripping him off and took his pictures. Owing to the humiliation caused by that accident, the victim student had difficulties going through with the school life. On March 15, he reported what assailants inflicted on him to the university authorities to settle this problem. However, they did not take adequate measures. They just took superficial actions like promising to punish the assailants or recommending a leave of absence to the victim. In fact, the authorities did not actually take disciplinary actions against them. There are statutes regarding this situation. According to the statutes, inflictors must be punished immediately and be segregated from the victim. However, they have not been punished yet and the victim says that he often feels humiliated and mentally traumatized by encountering them. The authorities also violated the rule stating that when an accident is notified, the victim must be sent to a counseling center. A rough attitude such as neglecting university statutes aggravated the problem. It is the second time in 2016 at Konkuk University (KU) that sexual harassment occurred during college events. The news media with the former one enormously at the beginning of first semester and, the later one was reported on October 17. Before the accidents rose to the surface, there had been several problems at MT. The authorities took preventive measures such as sex education. However, it was a complacent action that overlooked an exact cause of an accident. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Sexual Harassment in the Industrial Design Major On October 23th, 2016, an SNS accusing sexual molestation by a professor of Industrial Design Major was posted. As a result of the impact of the SNS, an investigation into this incident was started and most of details were confirmed as facts. However, because there are no precise victims and the person who posted on SNS is anonymous, the school decided to solve problems within the department on its own. On October 24th, 2016, there was face-to-face talk with the dean and a chief of administration by college student president, the Industrial Design Major and the College of Art & Design trying to solve these problems. In the field of art, the relationship between students and professors lasts even after graduation and this makes it difficult to solve these problems within the department on its own. Moreover, on October 27th, 2016, a professor’s conference was held where they said “these incidents are going to stop by acquiring a written statement saying that incident like this will not occur in the future” As a result, that major resisted the professor’s conference and insisted that it be discussed with all students, confirming additional victims. Furthermore, they accepted the opinions of victims stating “because detective punishment takes a lengthy period of time, I don’t want to have the burden about that.” Due to this opinion, the decision to ask for help from the Gender Equality Committee was made as a solution. The reason why they ask for help from the Gender Equality Committee is it is difficult for the suspect to grasp the identity of the applicant and it is necessary to progress towards a disciplinary committee. <Key reported details regarding sexual molestation> 1. Professor touched the thigh of a female student in a public space with many students. 2. Professor had a dash at putting off the pants within the space of female students. As a result, the GSA contrived countermeasures through their conferences. First, expanding the employees of the Gender Equality Committee and composing supporters in each college. Investigation of incidents occurring on campus is made at the the Gender Equality Committee. However, there is only one counselor, making it impossible to take actions quickly due to the lack of human strength and time limits. Second, strengthening the punishment of sexual molestation. The level of punishment will be reinforced without distinguishing between professors or students. Therefore, the GSA said this sexual molestation incident of Industrial Design Major will strictly get punished. Third, the establishment of a realistic manual about incidents. Realistic manual means that the manual will be changed to be match situations faster and more accurately after incidents. Moreover, promotion and communication will go side-by-side with everyone. “Except for these countermeasures, we hope to get better solutions through participation of students.” the GSA added. KU 영자신문 [Reporter's View] Is Korea Really Safe? People especially women these days feel nervous on their way home. Aren't you worried that someone may harm you at night? Don't you feel nervous when you hear the news that someone was killed or kidnapped on their way home? There are so many incidents where a suspect attacked unknown victims in 2016. The following are three big issues that have happened so far in 2016. First, the most talked one is the Gangnam station murder case. The victim was out with her friends but the murder happened when she went to the toilet. She was murdered for the one reason that she was just the first woman who came to the bathroom after the suspect arrived there. Even though the suspect had mental illness, it is not easy to understand and recognize that the reason he killed her is that she is just a woman. Those two had never even seen each other before and had no relationship with each other. On top of this, the Surak mountain murder case was also another instance where the suspect and victim had no relationship. The suspect said after he was released, he bought a knife to kill someone. He wondered if there was a person who climbed the mountain in that morning. Then he killed the first person he met. He had no reason to kill anyone and he had no money. Third, there is a woman who is recovering from moyamoya disease. It is a rare disease that whe re t he c e re brova sc ul a r becomes more and more narrow and then, cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage occurs. When she was on the way home after working at a part-time job, a drunken man, who worked as a comedian, threatened her with a deadly weapon. She ran home as fast as she could and collapsed when she arrived. As a result, she came to find out she had the disease. The suspect, however, claimed that he is innocent because he was drunk and did not know about her disease. The suspects of all these three incidents attacked people that they did not know. However, an OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) ranking found that South Korea was first in public safety in 2015. It is really embarrassing that people who live in the safest country feel nervous everyday life. Regardless of the title “the best nation of public order”, indiscriminate crimes targeting strangers are increasing and more people live in anxiety because they are not safe from crime. When people mourned the victim of Gangnam station, they said that “we survived because we were not there”. It seems that the public’ s response to this unfortunate situation represents the unstable psychological situation in the whole of Korea. Can we really live a life where we think that I could be the victim anytime or anywhere? Are you safe today?
