Do you know about blind date applications? Maybe you have seen their advertisements at least once. It has become one of the places where people meet and start their love. Applications introduce you to new people and then you choose the person you want to meet among them. When someone asks you to meet and you are not satisfied with them, they can also reject the suggestion. If man and woman are both satisfied to each other, they can open a chat room. Then, they can share their real phone number for more contact. Do you think you can meet your real partner this way? There are some couples who met there and eventually get married. However, there are some people who use it as a tool of crime. What do you think about people trying to find their love through blind date applications? Is it good or bad? We have collected the opinions of Konkuk University students. Let us hear their opinions together. Good Choi Min-ki / Junior / Division of Interdisciplinary Studies I agree with using the blind date application. Nowadays people are so busy studying and working. But if they use this application, they could save time to find partners and it would be convenient. Especially in case of free application, people can make relationship for free. I know that meeting using application can be dangerous. However, people using this application exchange their personal information among themselves. And by this reason, I think that they are already aware of dangers. Also, when introvert people utilize this application, they can break barriers and meet others by overcoming shyness. Moreover, I saw my acquaintance who met her boyfriend using a blind date application. Although there is possibility of failure, it is able people to have serious relationships. Park Yu-jin, / Senior / English Language & Literature I agree that blind date application can make mate. I have heard about the application and I saw many people using them. In case of Amanda application, detailed identity needs to be certified. So, it has good reputation and people use this with trust. Although there are strange and bad applications, if people use good application and recognize carefully, people will get a fine mate. People can filter application that has bad intention. To users, it should be necessary choice. Blind date that relates acquaintances has restriction. However, blind date application has less restriction and it depends on the user’s mind whether they will go on a blind date or not. With application, people can look for their mate without acquaintances. Moreover, I can see couples around me developing into serious relationships after using blind date application and often, they have better results. Jeon Seong-il/ Freshman / Systems Biotechnology Major I think blind date application is appropriate to meet one’s love. It is not a bad way if you don’t have a matchmaker around and if you really believe you could fall in true love. When timid person demands blind date, he or she hesitates. On the other hand, without worrying, a person can go on a blind date through application. Also, through the application, a person can meet another person that fits their qualification. Among many people, they can meet their ideal type. Moreover, using an application can meet various people without limitation. Therefore, people will have high and rapid possibility to meet their mate. Lastly, most application makers make blind date application. So if users use application with right purpose, one’s love will approach. Bad Jeong Youn-bi / Senior / Department of Biological Engineering I have not used the application of blind date, but I think that it is dangerous to use. Since people can deceive other people by uploading false information, data provided by this application is unreliable. And users don’t know about the people who they are going to meet. Consequently, there is high probability for crime. And the relationship made by the application cannot be serious. Users don’t contemplate about their partner to love and meet anyone. Thus, it is an irrational method to make relationships. Of course, there are many people feeling difficulty to build human relations. However, using the application to overcome their problem is not a fundamental measure. In addition, it is a kind of making relations because they meet new people on a blind date. Therefore, I think that they should seek for more fundamental measures so it cannot be a reason to use the application of blind date. Kim Sung-bin/Material Science Engineering/Senior I heard about the blind date application, and even my acquaintance used it many times. According to his story, he met a woman from that application and before long, they got close to each other. Their relation, however, didn’t last long because of their characters were so different. They even went to the police station because of their dispute. All other cases’ results are similar to this. In a roundabout way, I have an experience of blind date application and I know the side effect of it. The application is optimized to modern men who wants casual meeting. They can use it for their enjoyment in a moment. Therefore, people like me who want to meet partners seriously should avoid these applications. I think this application should be accessed carefully considering to the purpose of the user. I am against to use this application, of course. Ryou Song-hee/Industrial Design/Senior I have never used a blind date application, and I am sure that I will not use it in the future also. The reason that I think blind date application is inappropriate is because it would be hard to develop the relationship into a deeper concept since it is the first time meeting with total strangers. Also, leakage of personal information could occur due to the characteristic of the application. By showing our information on the application, anyone could have access and it could lead to serious effects. Moreover, there are chances for people to use the application for bad reasons. Lastly, people can judge others’ appearance by looking at the photos that they upload, and I think it could be a big humiliation for those who become the subject of it. People especially women these days feel nervous on their way home. Aren't you worried that someone may harm you at night? Don't you feel nervous when you hear the news that someone was killed or kidnapped on their way home? There are so many incidents where a suspect attacked unknown victims in 2016. The following are three big issues that have happened so far in 2016. First, the most talked one is the Gangnam station murder case. The victim was out with her friends but the murder happened when she went to the toilet. She was murdered for the one reason that she was just the first woman who came to the bathroom after the suspect arrived there. Even though the suspect had mental illness, it is not easy to understand and recognize that the reason he killed her is that she is just a woman. Those two had never even seen each other before and had no relationship with each other. On top of this, the Surak mountain murder case was also another instance where the suspect and victim had no relationship. The suspect said after he was released, he bought a knife to kill someone. He wondered if there was a person who climbed the mountain in that morning. Then he killed the first person he met. He had no reason to kill anyone and he had no money. Third, there is a woman who is recovering from moyamoya disease. It is a rare disease that whe re t he c e re brova sc ul a r becomes more and more narrow and then, cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage occurs. When she was on the way home after working at a part-time job, a drunken man, who worked as a comedian, threatened her with a deadly weapon. She ran home as fast as she could and collapsed when she arrived. As a result, she came to find out she had the disease. The suspect, however, claimed that he is innocent because he was drunk and did not know about her disease. The suspects of all these three incidents attacked people that they did not know. However, an OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) ranking found that South Korea was first in public safety in 2015. It is really embarrassing that people who live in the safest country feel nervous everyday life. Regardless of the title “the best nation of public order”, indiscriminate crimes targeting strangers are increasing and more people live in anxiety because they are not safe from crime. When people mourned the victim of Gangnam station, they said that “we survived because we were not there”. It seems that the public’ s response to this unfortunate situation represents the unstable psychological situation in the whole of Korea. Can we really live a life where we think that I could be the victim anytime or anywhere? Are you safe today? KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Sexual Harassment in the Industrial Design Major On October 23th, 2016, an SNS accusing sexual molestation by a professor of Industrial Design Major was posted. As a result of the impact of the SNS, an investigation into this incident was started and most of details were confirmed as facts. However, because there are no precise victims and the person who posted on SNS is anonymous, the school decided to solve problems within the department on its own. On October 24th, 2016, there was face-to-face talk with the dean and a chief of administration by college student president, the Industrial Design Major and the College of Art & Design trying to solve these problems. In the field of art, the relationship between students and professors lasts even after graduation and this makes it difficult to solve these problems within the department on its own. Moreover, on October 27th, 2016, a professor’s conference was held where they said “these incidents are going to stop by acquiring a written statement saying that incident like this will not occur in the future” As a result, that major resisted the professor’s conference and insisted that it be discussed with all students, confirming additional victims. Furthermore, they accepted the opinions of victims stating “because detective punishment takes a lengthy period of time, I don’t want to have the burden about that.” Due to this opinion, the decision to ask for help from the Gender Equality Committee was made as a solution. The reason why they ask for help from the Gender Equality Committee is it is difficult for the suspect to grasp the identity of the applicant and it is necessary to progress towards a disciplinary committee. <Key reported details regarding sexual molestation> 1. Professor touched the thigh of a female student in a public space with many students. 2. Professor had a dash at putting off the pants within the space of female students. As a result, the GSA contrived countermeasures through their conferences. First, expanding the employees of the Gender Equality Committee and composing supporters in each college. Investigation of incidents occurring on campus is made at the the Gender Equality Committee. However, there is only one counselor, making it impossible to take actions quickly due to the lack of human strength and time limits. Second, strengthening the punishment of sexual molestation. The level of punishment will be reinforced without distinguishing between professors or students. Therefore, the GSA said this sexual molestation incident of Industrial Design Major will strictly get punished. Third, the establishment of a realistic manual about incidents. Realistic manual means that the manual will be changed to be match situations faster and more accurately after incidents. Moreover, promotion and communication will go side-by-side with everyone. “Except for these countermeasures, we hope to get better solutions through participation of students.” the GSA added. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Improper Measures Aggravated the Problems Caused by Sexual Harassment This March, there was a sexual harassment at the MT of Department of Civil Engineering. Three male students applied toothpaste to the body of a sleeping male freshman student after stripping him off and took his pictures. Owing to the humiliation caused by that accident, the victim student had difficulties going through with the school life. On March 15, he reported what assailants inflicted on him to the university authorities to settle this problem. However, they did not take adequate measures. They just took superficial actions like promising to punish the assailants or recommending a leave of absence to the victim. In fact, the authorities did not actually take disciplinary actions against them. There are statutes regarding this situation. According to the statutes, inflictors must be punished immediately and be segregated from the victim. However, they have not been punished yet and the victim says that he often feels humiliated and mentally traumatized by encountering them. The authorities also violated the rule stating that when an accident is notified, the victim must be sent to a counseling center. A rough attitude such as neglecting university statutes aggravated the problem. It is the second time in 2016 at Konkuk University (KU) that sexual harassment occurred during college events. The news media with the former one enormously at the beginning of first semester and, the later one was reported on October 17. Before the accidents rose to the surface, there had been several problems at MT. The authorities took preventive measures such as sex education. However, it was a complacent action that overlooked an exact cause of an accident. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Konkuk, the Way to Globalization KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Konkuk’s Online Service Has a Long Way To Go Several problems are discovered in KU e-campus In addition to the general problems of Konkuk University’s (KU) portal, the e-campus was also discovered to have some serious problems. Many students who have e-lectures should follow the course via the e-campus website. However, students are suffering from log-in errors. Therefore they have complained about this problem to the postscript section of website and application. That is why their attendances are not acknowledged. In fact, two years ago, the same problem existed. Because of recent problems in KU’s online service (KU portal problem) and previous e-campus problems, students are insisting Konkuk improve their online service by posting on the Q&A page in KU website.
