Many students who have e-lectures should follow the course via the e-campus website. However, students are suffering from log-in errors. Therefore they have complained about this problem to the postscript section of website and application. That is why their attendances are not acknowledged. In fact, two years ago, the same problem existed. Because of recent problems in KU’s online service (KU portal problem) and previous e-campus problems, students are insisting Konkuk improve their online service by posting on the Q&A page in KU website. KU 영자신문 건국불레틴 Photo 콘테스트에 참여하세요! Why don’t you participate in The Konkuk Bulletin Photo contest? KU 영자신문 [Interview] What Is Design for All? 1. Please tell us about Dotween. Dotween is a brand which receives messages from customers and inscribes them on products by converting to braille. We redefined braille not only as the language for blind people but also a heartfelt language, so it can be approached by the non-disabled. Ultimately, our purpose is eliminating prejudices about the blind. Thus, we started this brand to convey information and knowledge about blind people more naturally. 2. It is hard to establish a business as a university student. How did you have the motives to attempt it? My partner has thought about the issue of the blind since he was a high school student. After much consideration, he concluded that making a brand is the most effective way to alert people to this issue. 3. Why did you utilize crowd-funding1 when you started a business? We thought that we could introduce this brand and reach the masses easily by using crowd-funding. Furthermore, we needed to gain sympathy and energy from many people. To satisfy our needs, the platform of crowd-funding was a good fit for us. Thanks to these thoughts, we started this way and raised capital successfully. 4. Why do you pursue the concept of inscribing braille in leather? Braille is the language which is felt and touched by hand. Moreover, leather has a warm sensitivity and it ages nicely when it is touched. We thought combining these materials can make a synergy and let the disabled and the non-disabled go through the same experience. Therefore, we made designs reflecting these traits. 5. In another interview, you said that braille becomes a secret code because of a method that inscribes messages. Why did you think this way? Braille consists only of six dots. However, it has different meanings according to the combination. Nowadays, many people hesitate to express gratitude and love, so they do not write letters. Thus, we set up to deliver secret messages and decided to use this way, as hoping they would convey and express their mind through this system. 6. What is the most memorable message for you? Some messages come to mind. Among other messages, “My father is my hero” is the most impressive to me. My customer presented the wallet inscribed with this message on Parents’ Day. I imagined her father’s look as he was moved by her gift and I was proud of my job. In addition, people often inscribe messages for themselves to encourage when they are tired or going through various hardships. 7. I heard you have a plan to extend your business abroad. How will you carry forward the business? We received a lot of feedbacks to expand overseas because leather’s merits were appreciated in many countries. Moreover, issues about the blind are worldwide problems. For these reasons, we thought collaboration with other nations can help to achieve our ultimate purpose. Furthermore, our acquaintances introduced interested people from the United States and France and a Frenchman made a connection to intern at our company. Based on this, we sent and received e-mails to suggest collaboration and I am going to go on a business trip to have meeting with the people. 8. Do you have any plans to publish a publication? We planned to cooperate with the project to communicate stories about the blind. We collaborated with “Our eyes”, an organization to support art training for visually handicapped children. The message of the book is that being blind is just a characteristic, not a flaw. We hope readers take a broader view and think more about the issues. 9. Among many methods, why did you use design to solve misconceptions about the blind? To approach these issues, making something attractive and interesting will raise people’s awareness. Thus, we felt that design acts as a bridge for more people to experience and access the issues. 10. Activities such as Dotween are small. Why did you decide to promote these activities? I debated with my partners about the reason why the rights of minorities are infringed and injustice is formed. As a result, we concluded that people did not get enough information or their awareness was wrong. The gap between the blind and the non-blind comes out from these factors. Therefore, we thought that some small attention and a little information can make everyone live in a fair society. Big campaigns that are led by large organizations are good, of course. However, one individual’s correct attitude helps more people work in this environment. This is a small step now, but we believe that it can grow like the butterfly effect, so we can convey our goals entirely to people. 11. Do you have any messages to tell to KU’s students? I hope that students live their life worthily, not just seeing your goal blindly. Lowering your tempo and considering what is valuable in life and your interests must be good for you. Moreover, one simple experience can become your good stepping stone. Therefore, I recommend you to have many experiences and do your best! Thank you! KU 영자신문 [Interview] Treasure Hidden Until Now, Holt 1. Please introduce Holt. Holt started after the Korean Conflict in 1955, trying to find children who had lost their parents homes. The founder Harry Holt not only supported Korean orphans through his whole life but adopted eight of them. When people think of Holt, they tend to only think of adoption. However, we do various works such as helping foster mothers, running adoption camps and programs to help adoptees learn about their mother land culture. Moreover, we focus on helping single parent families. Single moms suffer from unplanned pregnancies. We support them by offering medical care and help them finish their education. There is more. There are so many services we offer that it is hard to explain all. We help the disabled find jobs and run a show choir, a wheelchair basketball team, and a special school for them. We also run a child protective service center and a multicultural service center. 2. Holt is very famous for adoption. Is it the biggest organization in Korea? We can say that. We arrange 30 percent of the whole adoptions in Korea. 3. After the adoption process, do you get to hear from the adopted kids? There are some parents who send their kid’s pictures to the foster mothers. There was a time when the adoption family visited Korea and spent time with their foster mothers to experience Korean culture. 4. What businesses is Holt focusing on right now? We started to focus more on preventing child abuse and helping single mothers. We made a “kangaroo store” which hires single moms as workers and we pay them through the profit. There are three stores in Korea including Seoul, Suwon, and Incheon. This June was our first anniversary and the business is planned to expand. Not only this but with the sponsorship from companies, we also provide rescue kits which include diapers and offer financially considerations to single moms of 200,000 won a month. 5. I heard that there are many honorary ambassadors for Holt. Is there anyone we might have heard of? There are many celebrities who are honorary ambassadors for Holt such as the couple Jung Hye-young and Sean, and Singer Alex, Baek Ji-young, and so on. Moreover, apart from an honorary ambassador, Holt received a lot of spotlight from being on the program “Infinite Challenge.” 6. Is there any volunteering that university students can participate in? I especially recommend college students volunteer as Holt overseas volunteers. All the costs are free including the air fare. What is special about this is that the students make the programs by themselves and get to think of how to help the kids. This year, 12 students are going to Cambodia for 11 days. All the volunteering is notified on our webpage so be sure to check it often if you are interested. Students can help support the administration, share their talents, or help sort the goods at the Kangaroo store. For those who are skilled at English, there are many volunteering related to a program called “Say Hi.” In this program, volunteers interpret, translate, and invite the adoptee to their homes. Foreigners can also help volunteer in the program. There is also volunteering for the disabled as well. 7. Are there special specifications for people who want to work for Holt? I think that people who can act more than just say words are right for the job. Anyone can talk but not a lot of people can put their words into action. We can divide the department into two parts as a whole- counselors and office workers. The counselors who directly deal with the clients must have a social worker license. For the office workers, it can be given preferential treatments. For the official workers who do not need a special license, there are many different kinds of majors such as Economics, Business Administration, and Mass Communication. The manager in the media relations team is a Philosophy major from KU. 8. When do you feel content working? I feel content working here when I see people who become happy due to adoption and hear things such as “Our lives became more fulfilled due to adoption.” Moreover, I feel rewarded when I see sick babies become healthy due to our help. Since I work in the media relations team, I also feel proud when more people get to know and have interest in Holt. I feel very happy working here. Since all the people working here fundamentally have minds to want to help others, we all thoughtfully considerate other people’s feelings first.
