Mystery #1 TRUE *This article contains some fictional content.* Konkuk University (KU) is known for its enormous size of campus in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. However, there is a rumor that another KU campus is located in Busan. It is not the branch school, KU Glocal Campus in Chungju. It is rather a concept of KU split in to half, one in Seoul and the other in Busan. However, many KU students say that they have never heard of the Busan campus. Then is this really a false rumor? At that moment, a mysterious old diary was sent to the Student Union Building’s room 506. 1951/X/X Dear Diary, To flee away from the brutal war, my family and I joined the refuge way to Busan. In Busan, there was a “Wartime United University” which combined various universities for student refugees. However, I entered the “College of Political Science”, an independently managed temporary school building that began classes separately. Considering the poor environment of wartime, we stayed in a temporary elementary school made from a shack… According to the KU Museum, the “College of Political Science” above was actually KU's changed name in 1949 and they really did arrange an independent temporary school in Busan, Seodaesin-dong, during the Korean War in 1951. However, after the Ceasefire Agreement was signed on July 27th, 1953, they left the Interim College in Busan and came up to Seoul. The college eventually grew into a full-fledged university in 1959 bearing the new name “Konkuk University”, which opened at a new site in Jangan-dong, Seoul (Now it changed to Hwayang-dong and it is currently the Seoul Campus of KU). Therefore, it turns out to be “True” that another KU campus existed in Busan during the 6.25 Korean War. However, it is a shame that students, who have not heard about Busan Campus before, could have known the truth if they visited KU Museum. It seems that KU students are short of historical consciousness about our school. Why not visit KU Museum and take an opportunity to know KU better? Mystery #2 TRUE Here in KU, there is a class called “Women’s Studies” that promotes the merits of co-education. A very long time ago, there was a rumor that if two students become a couple in class, they could receive an A+ from the professor. Let us find out more about this rumor through the KUNG class review comments. Comment: If you guys prove to be a couple in “Women’s Studies”, you could get A+ grade. Reply: Except the professor do not accept students who were already a couple. The romance has to begin inside the classroom. Reply: I heard that there is some kind of verification like kissing. Reply: Whatever! Anyone just date me! However, some said that nothing happens in reality, even if some students became a couple. In order to figure out the truth of this rumor, we interviewed the main character of this rumor, the professor of “Women’s Studies”. Let us introduce Professor Lee In-suk, a lovely woman who likes to wink when your eyes meet. Q: Is it true that you give an A+ when your class students become a couple? A: Yes, it started very long time ago but it happened very rarely. There were two or three couples before who really fell in love in my class. One couple was a girl from Humanities College and boy from Animal Bioscience College. I especially remember them because they studied hard and dated passionately at the same time. Eventually, they both got an A+. Q: How do you verify the situation? A: First, I can figure it out through years of experience, whether they started fresh love through this class or have been flirting before. Moreover, I take “Process and procedure” very seriously. Once I had these Physical Education Department students who never showed any process of flirting and just came up to me suddenly at the end of the semester. It was obvious that they were just asking for A+ so I did not accept them. Especially when I ask them questions like “What made you attracted to her/him?”, I can distinguish honest students from those improvising. Q: What drove you to start this event and what is the purpose? A: Actually, during the week three class, the main topic is called “Sex and Love”. Students learn about what love is, how to date, and what is the desirable standard of love. Although the 20s is the age when people cannot avoid experiencing trials and errors, I just hope many students do not get hurt by love and learn how to break up wisely. Moreover, I wanted to tell the students to date as many people as possible because this is the perfect time in their life and they should not miss the flowers to bloom. To do so, students must look at the people around them and open their hearts to let someone inside. However, there are still people who misunderstand the purpose so when the class of “Sex and Love” begins, I clearly explain why I started this event but never force the students to become a couple. Q: Any last thing to say? A: It is true that the rumor got a little exaggerated but if another real couple comes out in my class… Why not give them A+? I will keep my promise. To give a tip, we assign seats in this class so try sitting next to someone you are interested in to. Mystery #3 FALSE Recently, ducks living at Sejong University (SJU) Campus are at risk of losing their homes. Construction has begun right beside the pond where the ducks live and some pollution was inevitable. However, nothing was done by SJU because they have announced that they have no responsibility for ducks that are just naturally born there. Similar to SJU, we have numerous ducks, geese, and pigeons that live around KU Ilgamho Lake. Their presence cannot be ignored so students make jokes like “I am confused whether KU symbol is a bull or ducks.” They seem to be left in peace but there are some rumors that the College of Veterinary Medicine supervises them. Thus, The Konkuk Bulletin planned to investigate whether the rumors are true and who is actually in charge of the ducks. First, we contacted the student union of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and asked about the rumor. As expected, the College of Veterinary Medicine replied that the rumors of them taking care of animals in KU was irrelevant. Nonetheless, we did not lose hope and contacted the School Office of Facilities (Facilities Maintenance) to find out if they know the ducks are being supervised. According to an additional investigation with KT Security, it turned out to be a false report again. However, KT Security concluded by saying that although the main purpose of the CCTV is for students’ safety or preventing crime but they can find out when the ducks are in danger. Unfortunately, only this case has been proven to be “False”. We hope that KU arranges some kind of preventive measures for the ducks to keep them safe around Ilgamho Lake. #Tipbox Few days later, a sniper-person from the Department of Veterinary Medicine posted on Facebook saying that asking Veterinary Medicine student to take care the ducks is the same as asking Computer Science & Engineering student to repair computers, or Chemical Engineering to make soju. The Konkuk Bulletin sincerely apologize for asking such questions. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Present Condition of The PRIME Project Recently, there are seven questions about PRIME project in KU hompage’s Q&A (Question and Answer). Most of these questions are about the effect of PRIME project to their major. KU Student Union also wrote two questions which contain some details about PRIME project. Above these, you can easily search PRIME project in KU by just accessing the KU homepage. (There are many banners about PRIME project) Many labs which are for the College of Information & Communication are transferred to the New Engineering building, and Engineering building from New Millennium Hall. For the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology students, sunggwan which is dormitory made for mentioned students would be demolished. Therefore the students who want to move in to the dormitory should register by KU:L House. Additional department merging will not occur. There are two new scholarships which are related with PRIME project ; PRIME superb grade scholarship, and PRIME superb society of humanity scholarship. About 250 students will receive 650 million wons by these scholarships. KU 영자신문 [Cover] Are You "Dead"? Upcoming release of Vol.282! Many students who have e-lectures should follow the course via the e-campus website. However, students are suffering from log-in errors. Therefore they have complained about this problem to the postscript section of website and application. That is why their attendances are not acknowledged. In fact, two years ago, the same problem existed. Because of recent problems in KU’s online service (KU portal problem) and previous e-campus problems, students are insisting Konkuk improve their online service by posting on the Q&A page in KU website. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Konkuk, the Way to Globalization KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Improper Measures Aggravated the Problems Caused by Sexual Harassment This March, there was a sexual harassment at the MT of Department of Civil Engineering. Three male students applied toothpaste to the body of a sleeping male freshman student after stripping him off and took his pictures. Owing to the humiliation caused by that accident, the victim student had difficulties going through with the school life. On March 15, he reported what assailants inflicted on him to the university authorities to settle this problem. However, they did not take adequate measures. They just took superficial actions like promising to punish the assailants or recommending a leave of absence to the victim. In fact, the authorities did not actually take disciplinary actions against them. There are statutes regarding this situation. According to the statutes, inflictors must be punished immediately and be segregated from the victim. However, they have not been punished yet and the victim says that he often feels humiliated and mentally traumatized by encountering them. The authorities also violated the rule stating that when an accident is notified, the victim must be sent to a counseling center. A rough attitude such as neglecting university statutes aggravated the problem. It is the second time in 2016 at Konkuk University (KU) that sexual harassment occurred during college events. The news media with the former one enormously at the beginning of first semester and, the later one was reported on October 17. Before the accidents rose to the surface, there had been several problems at MT. The authorities took preventive measures such as sex education. However, it was a complacent action that overlooked an exact cause of an accident. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Sexual Harassment in the Industrial Design Major On October 23th, 2016, an SNS accusing sexual molestation by a professor of Industrial Design Major was posted. As a result of the impact of the SNS, an investigation into this incident was started and most of details were confirmed as facts. However, because there are no precise victims and the person who posted on SNS is anonymous, the school decided to solve problems within the department on its own. On October 24th, 2016, there was face-to-face talk with the dean and a chief of administration by college student president, the Industrial Design Major and the College of Art & Design trying to solve these problems. In the field of art, the relationship between students and professors lasts even after graduation and this makes it difficult to solve these problems within the department on its own. Moreover, on October 27th, 2016, a professor’s conference was held where they said “these incidents are going to stop by acquiring a written statement saying that incident like this will not occur in the future” As a result, that major resisted the professor’s conference and insisted that it be discussed with all students, confirming additional victims. Furthermore, they accepted the opinions of victims stating “because detective punishment takes a lengthy period of time, I don’t want to have the burden about that.” Due to this opinion, the decision to ask for help from the Gender Equality Committee was made as a solution. The reason why they ask for help from the Gender Equality Committee is it is difficult for the suspect to grasp the identity of the applicant and it is necessary to progress towards a disciplinary committee. <Key reported details regarding sexual molestation> 1. Professor touched the thigh of a female student in a public space with many students. 2. Professor had a dash at putting off the pants within the space of female students. As a result, the GSA contrived countermeasures through their conferences. First, expanding the employees of the Gender Equality Committee and composing supporters in each college. Investigation of incidents occurring on campus is made at the the Gender Equality Committee. However, there is only one counselor, making it impossible to take actions quickly due to the lack of human strength and time limits. Second, strengthening the punishment of sexual molestation. The level of punishment will be reinforced without distinguishing between professors or students. Therefore, the GSA said this sexual molestation incident of Industrial Design Major will strictly get punished. Third, the establishment of a realistic manual about incidents. Realistic manual means that the manual will be changed to be match situations faster and more accurately after incidents. Moreover, promotion and communication will go side-by-side with everyone. “Except for these countermeasures, we hope to get better solutions through participation of students.” the GSA added. KU 영자신문 [Reporter's View] Is Korea Really Safe? People especially women these days feel nervous on their way home. Aren't you worried that someone may harm you at night? Don't you feel nervous when you hear the news that someone was killed or kidnapped on their way home? There are so many incidents where a suspect attacked unknown victims in 2016. The following are three big issues that have happened so far in 2016. First, the most talked one is the Gangnam station murder case. The victim was out with her friends but the murder happened when she went to the toilet. She was murdered for the one reason that she was just the first woman who came to the bathroom after the suspect arrived there. Even though the suspect had mental illness, it is not easy to understand and recognize that the reason he killed her is that she is just a woman. Those two had never even seen each other before and had no relationship with each other. On top of this, the Surak mountain murder case was also another instance where the suspect and victim had no relationship. The suspect said after he was released, he bought a knife to kill someone. He wondered if there was a person who climbed the mountain in that morning. Then he killed the first person he met. He had no reason to kill anyone and he had no money. Third, there is a woman who is recovering from moyamoya disease. It is a rare disease that whe re t he c e re brova sc ul a r becomes more and more narrow and then, cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage occurs. When she was on the way home after working at a part-time job, a drunken man, who worked as a comedian, threatened her with a deadly weapon. She ran home as fast as she could and collapsed when she arrived. As a result, she came to find out she had the disease. The suspect, however, claimed that he is innocent because he was drunk and did not know about her disease. The suspects of all these three incidents attacked people that they did not know. However, an OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) ranking found that South Korea was first in public safety in 2015. It is really embarrassing that people who live in the safest country feel nervous everyday life. Regardless of the title “the best nation of public order”, indiscriminate crimes targeting strangers are increasing and more people live in anxiety because they are not safe from crime. When people mourned the victim of Gangnam station, they said that “we survived because we were not there”. It seems that the public’ s response to this unfortunate situation represents the unstable psychological situation in the whole of Korea. Can we really live a life where we think that I could be the victim anytime or anywhere? Are you safe today?
