연설의 비결
Most of us dread making a speech to a group,
우리 대부분은 사람들 앞에서 연설하는 걸 두려워하죠
but if you think of it as simple communication or helping others,
하지만 연설을 단순한 소통이나 다른 이를 돕는 것이라고 생각한다면
you won't be nervous.
떨리지 않을 겁니다.
You will need Knowledge, a Critic, Paper and pen, Role models,
먼저 지식과 비평가, 종이와 펜, 롤모델
Stories and metaphors, a Mirror, Note cards, a Strong voice and an Audience.
이야기와 비유, 거울, 노트카드, 힘있는 목소리 그리고 관객이 필요합니다.
Step 1. Know your subject and align your message with audience expectations.
1단계. 주제를 명확히 알고, 메세지를 청중의 기대에 부응시키세요.
Align A with B: A를 B와 일치시키다
Step 2. Prepare by role-playing the speech with a cohort to challenge your points.
2단계. 주된 논지를 비판해줄 친구와 역할극을 하며 연설 준비를 하세요.
Focus on one topic and set out your speech to cover issues.
하나의 토픽에 집중하고, 쟁점들을 포괄할 수 있게끔 하세요.
Step 3. Capture key elements on paper in draft, and refine and edit a day or two later.
3단계. 핵심 요소들을 종이에 대강 써두고, 하루 이틀 정도 후에 다듬고 수정하세요.
In draft: 대강, 초안으로
Be concise and simple, using words that are easy to pronounce.
간명하고 간단하게, 발음하기 쉬운 단어들로요.
Limit complex formulations, big words, and too many statistics in your speech
연설에서 복잡한 공식이나 어려운 말, 과다한 통계자료는 자제하세요.
Big words: (있어보이기 위한) 어려운 말
to avoid losing your audience.
청중들이 흥미를 잃게 하지 않으려면요.
Step 4. While you're preparing,
4단계. 준비를 할 때
summarize your speech in one sentence to be sure you’re on point.
핵심에서 벗어나지 않도록 하기 위해 연설을 한 문장으로 요약해 보세요.
Jot notes to trigger stories and metaphors you will use to emphasize important information.
중요한 정보를 강조할 때 쓸 이야기와 비유를 떠올릴 수 있도록 간단한 메모를 하세요.
Jot: 간단히 쓰다, 메모하다. Jot down something은 ‘~를 빠르고 간결히 적다, 메모해 두다’
Step 5. Study other speakers
5단계. 다른 연사들은 어떻게 하는지 보고
and absorb effective tendencies to enrich your presentation.
효과적인 특성들을 수용해 발표를 보다 풍부하게 하세요.
Allusions to people, history, or events must be brief and widely familiar.
언급되는 인물이나 역사, 사건은 간결해야 하고, 널리 알려진 것이어야 합니다.
Allusion to something: ~에 대한 언급, 암시
Step 6. Practice in front of a mirror, remembering to smile and gesture naturally.
6단계. 거울 앞에서 연습하고, 미소와 자연스런 제스처를 잊지 마세요.
Outline your speech on note cards,
노트카드로 연설의 아웃라인을 잡되
but try to get "off book" as soon as you can so your delivery will flow.
되도록 빨리 노트카드에서 눈을 떼서 말이 자연스럽게 나오도록 하세요.
Step 7. Project and modulate your voice, using emotion to telegraph key points.
7단계. 목소리를 크게 내고 조절하세요. 감정을 통해 핵심을 전달하세요.
Modulate: 조절하다
As long as it’s not overdone, humor is always a good idea.
과하지만 않다면, 유머를 활용하는 것도 좋습니다.
Step 8. Interact with the audience as you speak,
8단계. 청중들과 함께 하세요.
permitting questions and moving around, keeping the presentation dynamic.
질문을 받아주고 여기저기 걸어다니면서, 발표를 역동적으로 만드세요.
