On the following March, Kim won the by-election by “Am hang uh sa” student union. 53.5 percent of turnout (Counting seniors as graduate-to-be and only participants as the quorum) came out. However, an objection was raised that the by-election should have involved semester seven’s enroller from seniors because it was held in March. If they count semester seven’s enroller as valid voter, the turnout becomes 46.38 percent and the result gets invalid again. Therefore, Central Election Management Commission (CEMC) voted and decided to revote student union election. Kim, who felt unfair of this result, denied the revote and claimed that it was an election custom to count seniors as graduate-to-be and only participants as the quorum. However, CEMC notified disqualification to Kim and Glocal Central Committee members elected Cha Jun-hun (College of International Business) as the committee chairman. Consequently, Kim sued about the election issue and KU Seoul Campus “All Student Representative Meeting” voted to support Kim by making a proclamation. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Present Condition of The PRIME Project Recently, there are seven questions about PRIME project in KU hompage’s Q&A (Question and Answer). Most of these questions are about the effect of PRIME project to their major. KU Student Union also wrote two questions which contain some details about PRIME project. Above these, you can easily search PRIME project in KU by just accessing the KU homepage. (There are many banners about PRIME project) Many labs which are for the College of Information & Communication are transferred to the New Engineering building, and Engineering building from New Millennium Hall. For the College of Animal Bioscience & Technology students, sunggwan which is dormitory made for mentioned students would be demolished. Therefore the students who want to move in to the dormitory should register by KU:L House. Additional department merging will not occur. There are two new scholarships which are related with PRIME project ; PRIME superb grade scholarship, and PRIME superb society of humanity scholarship. About 250 students will receive 650 million wons by these scholarships. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Welcome to KU, Mr. New Engineering Building The New Engineering building was built in Konkuk University (KU) during summer vacation. To build this building, KU spend 40 billion won, and it occupies about 25000 square meters. It is located in southern land of the Engineering building. Taeyoung and isu construction company had built this building from November, 2014 to August, 2016. The New Engineering building is the largest building in KU except for the KU hospital. This building contains some facilities which have not only high energy effectiveness but eco-friendly green energy. To improve the environment of existing engineering lab, most labs are transferred to the New Engineering building. The new building was designated with priority given to the lab. Therefore, there are a lot of labs in this building. It contains 127 labs of education which are for the College of Information & Communications and the College of Engineering, 29 labs which are for all colleges, two large lecture rooms, fourteen seminar rooms, and many amenities. Min Sang-gi, the twentieth KU president said, “The New Engineering building will be the symbol of KU to develop to the global university.” KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] New News About English Lectures English lecture means professor should use English to his lecture’s attendees. Many exchange students register these lectures because of its convenience of language, and communication with professors. Korean students also take these lectures thanks to their needs or conditions for graduation. There are several changes about English lecture from 2016. Largely, two contents are important things. From 2016 first semester, the method of grade evaluation changed. Previous method gives A, A+ to students by maximum 40 percentage and the rest receive grades as professor likes. Now, however, like other normal lectures (the number of attendees should be over fifteen) English lectures also have to apply existing relative evaluation standard. From February, 2017 graduate would be able to graduate more easily than before. Previous standard requires three English lectures to graduate. Now, however, the standard requires only two English lectures. More details are written as following table. People especially women these days feel nervous on their way home. Aren't you worried that someone may harm you at night? Don't you feel nervous when you hear the news that someone was killed or kidnapped on their way home? There are so many incidents where a suspect attacked unknown victims in 2016. The following are three big issues that have happened so far in 2016. First, the most talked one is the Gangnam station murder case. The victim was out with her friends but the murder happened when she went to the toilet. She was murdered for the one reason that she was just the first woman who came to the bathroom after the suspect arrived there. Even though the suspect had mental illness, it is not easy to understand and recognize that the reason he killed her is that she is just a woman. Those two had never even seen each other before and had no relationship with each other. On top of this, the Surak mountain murder case was also another instance where the suspect and victim had no relationship. The suspect said after he was released, he bought a knife to kill someone. He wondered if there was a person who climbed the mountain in that morning. Then he killed the first person he met. He had no reason to kill anyone and he had no money. Third, there is a woman who is recovering from moyamoya disease. It is a rare disease that whe re t he c e re brova sc ul a r becomes more and more narrow and then, cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage occurs. When she was on the way home after working at a part-time job, a drunken man, who worked as a comedian, threatened her with a deadly weapon. She ran home as fast as she could and collapsed when she arrived. As a result, she came to find out she had the disease. The suspect, however, claimed that he is innocent because he was drunk and did not know about her disease. The suspects of all these three incidents attacked people that they did not know. However, an OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) ranking found that South Korea was first in public safety in 2015. It is really embarrassing that people who live in the safest country feel nervous everyday life. Regardless of the title “the best nation of public order”, indiscriminate crimes targeting strangers are increasing and more people live in anxiety because they are not safe from crime. When people mourned the victim of Gangnam station, they said that “we survived because we were not there”. It seems that the public’ s response to this unfortunate situation represents the unstable psychological situation in the whole of Korea. Can we really live a life where we think that I could be the victim anytime or anywhere? Are you safe today? KU 영자신문 [Interview] Treasure Hidden Until Now, Holt 1. Please introduce Holt. Holt started after the Korean Conflict in 1955, trying to find children who had lost their parents homes. The founder Harry Holt not only supported Korean orphans through his whole life but adopted eight of them. When people think of Holt, they tend to only think of adoption. However, we do various works such as helping foster mothers, running adoption camps and programs to help adoptees learn about their mother land culture. Moreover, we focus on helping single parent families. Single moms suffer from unplanned pregnancies. We support them by offering medical care and help them finish their education. There is more. There are so many services we offer that it is hard to explain all. We help the disabled find jobs and run a show choir, a wheelchair basketball team, and a special school for them. We also run a child protective service center and a multicultural service center. 2. Holt is very famous for adoption. Is it the biggest organization in Korea? We can say that. We arrange 30 percent of the whole adoptions in Korea. 3. After the adoption process, do you get to hear from the adopted kids? There are some parents who send their kid’s pictures to the foster mothers. There was a time when the adoption family visited Korea and spent time with their foster mothers to experience Korean culture. 4. What businesses is Holt focusing on right now? We started to focus more on preventing child abuse and helping single mothers. We made a “kangaroo store” which hires single moms as workers and we pay them through the profit. There are three stores in Korea including Seoul, Suwon, and Incheon. This June was our first anniversary and the business is planned to expand. Not only this but with the sponsorship from companies, we also provide rescue kits which include diapers and offer financially considerations to single moms of 200,000 won a month. 5. I heard that there are many honorary ambassadors for Holt. Is there anyone we might have heard of? There are many celebrities who are honorary ambassadors for Holt such as the couple Jung Hye-young and Sean, and Singer Alex, Baek Ji-young, and so on. Moreover, apart from an honorary ambassador, Holt received a lot of spotlight from being on the program “Infinite Challenge.” 6. Is there any volunteering that university students can participate in? I especially recommend college students volunteer as Holt overseas volunteers. All the costs are free including the air fare. What is special about this is that the students make the programs by themselves and get to think of how to help the kids. This year, 12 students are going to Cambodia for 11 days. All the volunteering is notified on our webpage so be sure to check it often if you are interested. Students can help support the administration, share their talents, or help sort the goods at the Kangaroo store. For those who are skilled at English, there are many volunteering related to a program called “Say Hi.” In this program, volunteers interpret, translate, and invite the adoptee to their homes. Foreigners can also help volunteer in the program. There is also volunteering for the disabled as well. 7. Are there special specifications for people who want to work for Holt? I think that people who can act more than just say words are right for the job. Anyone can talk but not a lot of people can put their words into action. We can divide the department into two parts as a whole- counselors and office workers. The counselors who directly deal with the clients must have a social worker license. For the office workers, it can be given preferential treatments. For the official workers who do not need a special license, there are many different kinds of majors such as Economics, Business Administration, and Mass Communication. The manager in the media relations team is a Philosophy major from KU. 8. When do you feel content working? I feel content working here when I see people who become happy due to adoption and hear things such as “Our lives became more fulfilled due to adoption.” Moreover, I feel rewarded when I see sick babies become healthy due to our help. Since I work in the media relations team, I also feel proud when more people get to know and have interest in Holt. I feel very happy working here.
