The reason why they ask for help from the Gender Equality Committee is it is difficult for the suspect to grasp the identity of the applicant and it is necessary to progress towards a disciplinary committee. <Key reported details regarding sexual molestation> 1. Professor touched the thigh of a female student in a public space with many students. 2. Professor had a dash at putting off the pants within the space of female students. As a result, the GSA contrived countermeasures through their conferences. First, expanding the employees of the Gender Equality Committee and composing supporters in each college. Investigation of incidents occurring on campus is made at the the Gender Equality Committee. However, there is only one counselor, making it impossible to take actions quickly due to the lack of human strength and time limits. Second, strengthening the punishment of sexual molestation. The level of punishment will be reinforced without distinguishing between professors or students. Therefore, the GSA said this sexual molestation incident of Industrial Design Major will strictly get punished. Third, the establishment of a realistic manual about incidents. Realistic manual means that the manual will be changed to be match situations faster and more accurately after incidents. Mystery #1 TRUE *This article contains some fictional content.* Konkuk University (KU) is known for its enormous size of campus in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. However, there is a rumor that another KU campus is located in Busan. It is not the branch school, KU Glocal Campus in Chungju. It is rather a concept of KU split in to half, one in Seoul and the other in Busan. However, many KU students say that they have never heard of the Busan campus. Then is this really a false rumor? At that moment, a mysterious old diary was sent to the Student Union Building’s room 506. 1951/X/X Dear Diary, To flee away from the brutal war, my family and I joined the refuge way to Busan. In Busan, there was a “Wartime United University” which combined various universities for student refugees. However, I entered the “College of Political Science”, an independently managed temporary school building that began classes separately. Considering the poor environment of wartime, we stayed in a temporary elementary school made from a shack… According to the KU Museum, the “College of Political Science” above was actually KU's changed name in 1949 and they really did arrange an independent temporary school in Busan, Seodaesin-dong, during the Korean War in 1951. However, after the Ceasefire Agreement was signed on July 27th, 1953, they left the Interim College in Busan and came up to Seoul. The college eventually grew into a full-fledged university in 1959 bearing the new name “Konkuk University”, which opened at a new site in Jangan-dong, Seoul (Now it changed to Hwayang-dong and it is currently the Seoul Campus of KU). Therefore, it turns out to be “True” that another KU campus existed in Busan during the 6.25 Korean War. However, it is a shame that students, who have not heard about Busan Campus before, could have known the truth if they visited KU Museum. Mystery #2 TRUE Here in KU, there is a class called “Women’s Studies” that promotes the merits of co-education. A very long time ago, there was a rumor that if two students become a couple in class, they could receive an A+ from the professor. Mystery #3 FALSE Recently, ducks living at Sejong University (SJU) Campus are at risk of losing their homes. Construction has begun right beside the pond where the ducks live and some pollution was inevitable. However, nothing was done by SJU because they have announced that they have no responsibility for ducks that are just naturally born there. Similar to SJU, we have numerous ducks, geese, and pigeons that live around KU Ilgamho Lake. Their presence cannot be ignored so students make jokes like “I am confused whether KU symbol is a bull or ducks.” They seem to be left in peace but there are some rumors that the College of Veterinary Medicine supervises them. Thus, The Konkuk Bulletin planned to investigate whether the rumors are true and who is actually in charge of the ducks. First, we contacted the student union of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and asked about the rumor. As expected, the College of Veterinary Medicine replied that the rumors of them taking care of animals in KU was irrelevant. Nonetheless, we did not lose hope and contacted the School Office of Facilities (Facilities Maintenance) to find out if they know the ducks are being supervised. According to an additional investigation with KT Security, it turned out to be a false report again. However, KT Security concluded by saying that although the main purpose of the CCTV is for students’ safety or preventing crime but they can find out when the ducks are in danger. Unfortunately, only this case has been proven to be “False”. We hope that KU arranges some kind of preventive measures for the ducks to keep them safe around Ilgamho Lake. #Tipbox Few days later, a sniper-person from the Department of Veterinary Medicine posted on Facebook saying that asking Veterinary Medicine student to take care the ducks is the same as asking Computer Science & Engineering student to repair computers, or Chemical Engineering to make soju. Please tell us about Dotween. Dotween is a brand which receives messages from customers and inscribes them on products by converting to braille. We redefined braille not only as the language for blind people but also a heartfelt language, so it can be approached by the non-disabled. Ultimately, our purpose is eliminating prejudices about the blind. Thus, we started this brand to convey information and knowledge about blind people more naturally. 2. It is hard to establish a business as a university student. How did you have the motives to attempt it? My partner has thought about the issue of the blind since he was a high school student. After much consideration, he concluded that making a brand is the most effective way to alert people to this issue. 3. Why did you utilize crowd-funding1 when you started a business? We thought that we could introduce this brand and reach the masses easily by using crowd-funding. Furthermore, we needed to gain sympathy and energy from many people. To satisfy our needs, the platform of crowd-funding was a good fit for us. Thanks to these thoughts, we started this way and raised capital successfully. 4. Why do you pursue the concept of inscribing braille in leather? Braille is the language which is felt and touched by hand. Moreover, leather has a warm sensitivity and it ages nicely when it is touched. We thought combining these materials can make a synergy and let the disabled and the non-disabled go through the same experience. Therefore, we made designs reflecting these traits. 5. In another interview, you said that braille becomes a secret code because of a method that inscribes messages. Why did you think this way? Braille consists only of six dots. However, it has different meanings according to the combination. Nowadays, many people hesitate to express gratitude and love, so they do not write letters. Thus, we set up to deliver secret messages and decided to use this way, as hoping they would convey and express their mind through this system. 6. What is the most memorable message for you? Some messages come to mind. Among other messages, “My father is my hero” is the most impressive to me. My customer presented the wallet inscribed with this message on Parents’ Day. I imagined her father’s look as he was moved by her gift and I was proud of my job. In addition, people often inscribe messages for themselves to encourage when they are tired or going through various hardships. 7. I heard you have a plan to extend your business abroad. How will you carry forward the business? We received a lot of feedbacks to expand overseas because leather’s merits were appreciated in many countries. Moreover, issues about the blind are worldwide problems. For these reasons, we thought collaboration with other nations can help to achieve our ultimate purpose. Furthermore, our acquaintances introduced interested people from the United States and France and a Frenchman made a connection to intern at our company. Based on this, we sent and received e-mails to suggest collaboration and I am going to go on a business trip to have meeting with the people. 8. Do you have any plans to publish a publication? We planned to cooperate with the project to communicate stories about the blind. We collaborated with “Our eyes”, an organization to support art training for visually handicapped children. The message of the book is that being blind is just a characteristic, not a flaw. We hope readers take a broader view and think more about the issues. 9. Among many methods, why did you use design to solve misconceptions about the blind? To approach these issues, making something attractive and interesting will raise people’s awareness. Thus, we felt that design acts as a bridge for more people to experience and access the issues. 10. Activities such as Dotween are small. Why did you decide to promote these activities? I debated with my partners about the reason why the rights of minorities are infringed and injustice is formed. As a result, we concluded that people did not get enough information or their awareness was wrong. The gap between the blind and the non-blind comes out from these factors. Therefore, we thought that some small attention and a little information can make everyone live in a fair society. Big campaigns that are led by large organizations are good, of course. However, one individual’s correct attitude helps more people work in this environment. This is a small step now, but we believe that it can grow like the butterfly effect, so we can convey our goals entirely to people. 11. Do you have any messages to tell to KU’s students? I hope that students live their life worthily, not just seeing your goal blindly. Lowering your tempo and considering what is valuable in life and your interests must be good for you. Moreover, one simple experience can become your good stepping stone. Therefore, I recommend you to have many experiences and do your best! KU 영자신문 [Reporter’s View] They are Our Family Too If there are five people in a supermarket, one of them would have a pet today. It is a certain fact that animals have become familiar to all of us as there are more than 100,000 people who have pets in their home. However, cruel abuse exists under the superiority of humans in the coexistence of bonding between humans and animals. Animal abuse is generally defined as every act that cases unnecessary or unreasonable harm to animals that is not for the reasons of self-defense or survival. Animal cruelty is a serious problem because it is not just confined to simply the strong harming the weak. The two biggest problems are that animal maltreatment has a negative influence on our society and the other is people might overlook the danger of abuse, not acknowledging the victims are also valuable members of society. It is very unethical behavior to abuse and kill weak and incapable of speech animals because of human’s outpouring of emotion. In addition, torturing animals can be an indicator of murder and all kinds of violence later in life. In fact, many criminals who commit brutal crimes confessed that they stabbed and hit animals a long time before committing their actual crimes. In Korea, we often hear about the cases of harming and killing animals on the news. Vicious incidents, for example, cutting tail of a stray cat, beating a dog to death, throwing a cat out of high-rise apartment, killing ex-girlfriend’s pet still occur these days. Animal abuse happens as a result of a way of thinking that makes light of life and unthoughtful mindset toward animals. Some people think the existence of animals is only for satisfying human’s convenience and needs but it is a completely anthropocentric point of view. A while ago, animals were just hunting targets for humans but now they have become partner with humans as pets and companions. In the USA, they take severe disciplinary action against those who treat animals cruelly, but in Korea, it is only a slap on the wrist. Fortunately, the current government in Korea seems to make an effort to improve the rights of animal. It is expected that a law prohibiting animal abuse that was pointless so far, will be revised to strengthen punishment and define regulations very clearly under the name of “Super animal abuse prohibition”. It enables any abused animals to be rescued emergency, imposing business cancellation or suspension to corporations cruel to animals and restricting pet ownership to animal abusers. Moreover, ill-treatment acts will be classified in detail. The category will be expanded to killing, assault, abandonment and mistreatment. Especially, a person who kill animals will be sent to jail for under three years or fined 5,000,000 won to 30,000,000 won. There is no society where only humans exist. People must not abuse animals just because they have the mere precedence over animals. Respecting life is not only for animals but it is also for us as well. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Never Ending Fight in Global Campus On November 20th 2015, a student union election was held in Konkuk University (KU) Glocal Campus but it was declared invalid because the turnout did not exceed 50 percent. In the following March, Kim won the by-election with the Am-hang-uh-sa student union. There was a 53.5 percent turnout (Counting seniors as graduate-to-be and only participants as the quorum). However, an objection was raised that the by-election should have involved seniors who enrolled seventh semesters in the quorum because it was held in March. If seniors who enrolled seventh semester are counted as valid voter, the turnout becomes 46.38 percent and the result gets invalid again. Therefore, the Central Election Management Commission (CEMC) voted and decided to have a revote for the student union election. Kim, who thought the result was unfair, denied the revote and claimed that it was an election custom to count seniors as graduate-to-be and only participants as the quorum. However, CEMC told Kim of the disqualification and Glocal Central Committee members elected Cha Jun-hun (College of International Business) as the committee chairman. Consequently, Kim sued the school about this issue and students from the KU Seoul Campus All Student Representative Meeting voted to support Kim by making a proclamation. KU 영자신문 [Campus Briefing] Ilgamho Lake Turns Into A Green Lake Nowadays, Ilgamho Lake has become green because of algal blooms. Among all the algae, the biggest cause of the color is cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria absorbs the nutriments which have indium and nitrogen. They grow quickly, so a "bloom" happens. There are plenty of nutriments in Ilgamho Lake. Most of them come from the deep mud layer of the lake's sediment. Mainly, nutriments flow out of the mud layer and they stimulate the growth of algae. Moreover, since the lake is confined, no water pours in and the water becomes dirty naturally. These are conditions in which algae can grow well. Also, the temperature affects the growth. Because Ilgamho Lake has many nutriments, algal blooms always occur regardless of the season on it. However, the most of the harmful algae occurs when the temperature becomes high, so summer is when the peak growth occurs. To make matters worse, cyanobacteria secrete a substance that makes the lake stink and toxin. For these reasons, Ilgamho Lake looks green and students can smell a nasty odor during summer. Thus, Konkuk University (KU) has taken a step to deal with algal blooms. The main way is using a boat on the lake. If the algae bloomed, they would rise to the surface of the lake. Consequently, using a boat can break the bloom on a surface and mix the water. It is a temporary measure because it cannot get rid of algae entirely.
