We read fiction for many reasons.

우리는 여러가지 이유로 픽션을 읽습니다.

To be entertained, to find out who’s done it,

재미있으려고, 누가 한 건지 알고 싶어서,

to travel to strange, new planets, to be scared,

이상하고 새로운 행성을 여행하려고, 무서워하려고,

to laugh, to cry, to think,

웃으려고, 울려고, 생각하려고,

to feel, to be so absorbed that for a while we forget where we are.

느끼려고, 너무 몰입한 나머지 지금 우리가 있는 곳이 어딘지 잊어버리려고.

So, how about writing fiction?

그렇다면, 픽션을 쓰는 건 어떨까요?

How do you suck your readers into your stories?

어떻게 하면 당신의 이야기로 독자들을 빨아들일 수 있을까요?

Suck something into something: ~을 ~로 빨아들이다

With an exciting plot? Maybe.

흥미진진한 플롯으로? 그럴지도 모르죠.

Fascinating characters? Probably.

매력적인 캐릭터들? 가능하죠.

Beautiful language? Perhaps.

아름다운 언어? 아마도요.

"Billie's legs are noodles. The ends of her hair are poison needles.

“빌리의 다리는 국수가락이다. 그녀의 머리칼 뜻은 독이 묻은 바늘이다.

Her tongue is a bristly sponge, and her eyes are bags of bleach."

그녀의 혀는 억센 스폰지이고, 그녀의 두 눈은 두 봉지의 표백제이다.

Bristly: 억센 털이 많은

Did that description almost make you feel as queasy as Billie?

이 같은 묘사가 당신을 빌리 만큼이나 메스꺼운 기분이 들게 하나요?

Queasy: 메스꺼운, 불쾌한

We grasp that Billie's legs aren't actually noodles.

우리는 빌리의 다리가 진짜로 국수가락이 아니란 걸 압니다.

To Billie, they feel as limp as cooked noodles.

빌리에게 두 다리는 마치 익은 국수가락처럼 흐물흐물하게 느껴질 겁니다.

Limp: 축 늘어진, 흐물흐물한, 힘이 없는

It's an implied comparison, a metaphor.

이게 바로 함축적인 비유, 즉 ‘은유’입니다.

So, why not simply write it like this?

그럼, 왜 그냥 이렇게 쓰지 않는 걸까요?

"Billie feels nauseated and weak."

“빌리는 메스껍고 약해진 기분이 들었다.”

Chances are the second description wasn't as vivid to you as the first.

아마 두 번째 묘사는 첫 번째 것만큼 생생하게 느껴지지 않을 겁니다.

The point of fiction is to cast a spell,

픽션에서 중요한 것은 ‘주문을 거는 것’입니다.

Cast a spell: 주문을 걸다. Spell은 ‘(마법) 주문’이라는 뜻이 있음

a momentary illusion that you are living in the world of the story.

즉 당신이 이야기 속 세계에 살고 있는 듯한 일시적인 환상을 주는 거죠.

Fiction engages the senses,

허구는 감각에 관여하며,

helps us create vivid mental simulacra of the experiences the characters are having.

등장인물들이 경험하는 것의 생생한 정신적 환영을 만들어내도록 도와줍니다.

Simulacrum: 환영, 환상 (복수형는 simulacra)

Stage and screen engage some of our senses directly.

무대와 스크린은 이와 같은 감각들을 직접적으로 다루는데

We see and hear the interactions of the characters and the setting.

우리는 등장인물들과 환경 간의 상호작용을 보고 듣습니다.

But with prose fiction,

하지만 산문으로 된 픽션은

Prose: 산문 (줄글로 쓰는 것. 운문, 즉 ‘시’와 대조되는 문학작품 형식)

all you have is static symbols on a contrasting background.

대비적인 배경 위의 정적인 기호들만이 있을 분입니다.

If you describe the story in matter of fact, non-tactile language,

만약 이야기를 사실 그대로, 생생하게 느껴지지 않는 언어로만 묘사한다면,

Tactile: 촉각의, 실제 같은 느낌이 나는, 생생하게 느껴지는

the spell risks being a weak one.

주문은 약해질 위험이 있습니다.

Your reader may not get much beyond interpreting the squiggles.

당신의 독자들은 무의미한 휘갈짐을 해석하는 것이 전부일 겁니다.

Squiggle: 아무렇게나 쓴 것, 휘갈겨 쓴 것

She will understand what Billie feels like,

빌리가 무엇을 느끼는지는 알겠지만

but she won't feel what Billie feels.

빌리가 느끼는 바를 느낄 수는 없을 것입니다.

She'll be reading, not immersed in the world of the story,

글을 읽고는 있겠지만 이야기 속 세계에 빠져들지는 않겠지요.

discovering the truths of Billie's life at the same time that Billie herself does.

빌리와 함께 빌리 인생의 진실을 찾아내면서 말입니다.

Fiction plays with our senses:

픽션은 우리의 감각을 가지고 놉니다.

Taste, smell, touch, hearing, sight,

미각, 후각, 촉각, 청각, 시각,

and the sense of motion.

그리고 움직임에 대한 감각.

It also plays with our ability to abstract and make complex associations.

픽션은 우리의 추상화 능력과 복잡한 연상을 할 수 있는 능력을 가지고 놉니다.

Assosiation: 연상, 연상되는 것

Look at the following sentence.

다음 문장을 봅시다.

"The world was ghost-quiet,

세상은 유령의 고요 속에 빠졌고

*아래에 나올 ‘은유’와 ‘직유’에 대한 설명 때문에 이렇게 번역했습니다

except for the crack of sails and the burbling of water against hull."

돛의 삐걱 소리와 선체에 부딪는 물의 보글거리는 소리 뿐이었다.

Burble: 부글부글 소리 내어 흐르다

The words, "quiet," "crack," and "burbling,"

“고요한” “삐걱 소리” 그리고 “보글거리는 소리”와 같은 단어들이

engage the sense of hearing.

청각에 관여합니다.

Notice that Buckell doesn't use the generic word sound.

버켈(작가)이 일반적인 의성어를 사용하지 않고 있는 걸 주목하세요.

Each word he chooses evokes a particular quality of sound.

그가 선택한 각각의 단어들이 소리의 특정한 성질을 불러일으킵니다.

Then, like an artist laying on washes of color to give the sense of texture to a painting,

그리고 마치 그림에 질감을 더하기 위해 색조를 배열하는 예술가처럼

Lay on: (색 등을) 칠하다

Wash: (수채화 등의) 엷은 색조

he adds another layer, motion, "the crack of sails,"

그는 또 다른 레이어인 움직임, “돛의 삐걱 소리”를 더하고

and touch, "the burbling of water against hull."

촉각인 “선체에 부딪는 물의 보글거리는 소리”를 더합니다.

Finally, he gives us an abstract connection

마지막으로 그는 추상적인 연결고리를 제시하는데요

by linking the word quiet with the word ghost.

“고요한”이라는 단어를 “유령”이라는 단어와 연결시키고 있죠.

Not "quiet as a ghost,"

“유령처럼 고요한”이라고 하지 않았는데요,

which would put a distancing layer of simile between the reader and the experience.

이런 표현은 독자와 경험 사이에 ‘직유법’이라는 간극을 놓을 수 있습니다.

Instead, Buckell creates the metaphor "ghost-quiet"

그 대신 버켈은 “유령-고요”라는 은유를 만들어 냈습니다

for an implied, rather than overt, comparison.

노골적이지 않은, 함축적인 비유를 위해서 말이죠.

Overt: 공공연한, 명백한, 노골적인

Writers are always told to avoid cliches

작가들은 클리셰에서 벗어나라는 얘기를 듣습니다.

Cliche: 클리셰, 뻔하고 진부한 것

because there's very little engagement for the reader in an overused image,

너무 많이 사용된 이미지로는 독자들이 잘 몰입할 수 없기 때문이죠.

Overused: 과도하게 사용된, 남용된

such as "red as a rose."

“장미처럼 붉은” 같은 거요.

But give them,

하지만 이런 표현은 어떤가요

"Love...began on a beach.

“사랑은… 어느 해변에서 시작되었다.

It began that day when Jacob saw Anette in her stewed-cherry dress,"

뭉근하게 끓인 체리 같은 드레스를 입은 안네트를 제이콥이 보았던 그 날.”

Stewed: (뭉근한 불에) 끓인

and their brains engage in the absorbing task

그리고 독자들의 뇌는 이 흥미진진한 일에 골몰하게 됩니다

Absorbing: 재미있는, 흡인력 있는, 몰두하게 하는

of figuring out what a stewed-cherry dress is like.

‘뭉근하게 끓인 체리 같은 드레스’가 뭔지 알아내는 일 말입니다.

Suddenly, they're on a beach about to fall in love.

그리고 문득 그들은 곧 사랑에 빠질 듯한 채로 해변에 있게 됩니다.

They're experiencing the story at both a visceral and a conceptual level,

마음속 깊숙한 곳과 관념적인 수준 양쪽 모두에서 이야기를 체험하면서

Visceral: 마음속으로부터의, 본능적인

meeting the writer halfway in the imaginative play of creating a dynamic world of the senses.

역동적인 감각의 세계를 만들어내는, 창의적인 놀이의 한복판에서 작가와 만나게 됩니다.

So when you write, use well-chosen words

따라서 글을 쓸 때는 신중하게 고른 단어를 사용하세요

to engage sound, sight, taste, touch, smell, and movement.

소리와 시각, 미각, 촉각, 후각 그리고 움직임을 다루기 위해서 말입니다.

Then create unexpected connotations among your story elements,

그리고 이야기 속에서 누구도 예상치 못한 함축(적 이미지)을 만들어 내세요

Connotation: 함축, 내포

and set your readers' brushfire imaginations alight.

그리고 작은 불에 불과한 독자들의 상상이 활활 타오르게 하세요.

Brushfire: 국지적인, 작은 덤불에 난 불 (큰 산불에 비해 작은 불을 의미)

Alight: 타오르는, 빛나는, 불이 켜진
