유튭으로 배우는 영어회화

도대체 문법이 뭐길래

You're telling a friend an amazing story,

당신이 친구한테 엄청난 이야기를 들려주는데

and you just get to the best part when suddenly he interrupts,

제일 중요한 부분에서 친구가 갑자기 끼어들어서는 말합니다.

Interrupt: (말하는 중에) 끼어들다

"The alien and I," not "Me and the alien."

“The alien and I”야, "Me and the alien."가 아니라.

Most of us would probably be annoyed,

대부분의 사람들은 짜증이 나겠죠.

but aside from the rude interruption,

하지만 끼어들기가 무례했단 건 둘째 치고,

does your friend have a point?

그런 행동이 타당할까요?

Someone has a point: ~의 의견이 타당하다, 일리가 있다

Was your sentence actually grammatically incorrect?

정말 당신의 문장이 문법적으로 틀렸나요?

And if he still understood it, why does it even matter?

틀렸다 한들 말 뜻을 알아들을 수만 있다면, 왜 그게 문제가 될 까요?

From the point of view of linguistics,

언어학자의 관점에서

grammar is a set of patterns for how words are put together to form phrases or clauses,

문법이란 단어가 구 또는 절을 형성하는 일련의 규칙적 패턴입니다.

Phrase: 구(두 개 이상의 단어로 구성된 문장 성분)

Clause: 절(주어와 술어의 구성이 있는 문장 성분)

whether spoken or in writing.

말이든 글이든 말이죠.

Different languages have different patterns.

다른 언어에는 다른 패턴이 있습니다.

In English, the subject normally comes first, followed by the verb, and then the object,

영어에서는 보통 주어가 먼저 오고, 그 다음이 동사, 그리고 목적어가 오죠.

while in Japanese and many other languages,

일본어와 다른 많은 언어의 경우

the order is subject, object, verb.

주어, 목적어, 동사의 순서로 오죠.

Some scholars have tried to identify patterns common to all languages,

모든 언어에 공통적인 패턴을 찾아보려 했던 학자들도 있었지만

but apart from some basic features, like having nouns or verbs,

명사나 동사가 있다는 몇몇 기본적 특징을 제외하고는

Apart from something: ~을 제외하고는

few of these so-called linguistic universals have been found.

소위 ‘언어적 통유성’이란 것은 거의 찾아볼 수 없었습니다.

Universal: 보편적인, 보편적 특성

And while any language needs consistent patterns to function,

어느 언어든지 제기능을 하기 위해전 일관된 패턴이 필요한데

the study of these patterns opens up an ongoing debate between two positions

이러한 패턴에 대한 연구는 두 견해 간의 끝나지 않은 논쟁을 불러일으켰습니다.

Open up something: ~을 개시하다

known as prescriptivism and descriptivism.

규범문법주의와 기술주의 간의 논쟁입니다.

Grossly simplified,

다소 무식하게 단순화해서

Grossly: 무식하게, 심하게

prescriptivists think a given language should follow consistent rules,

규범문법주의자들은 한 언어는 일관된 규칙을 따라야 한다고 보고

while descriptivists see variation and adaptation as a natural and necessary part of language.

기술주의자들은 변화와 적응을 언어의 자연스럽고도 필수적인 요소로 봅니다.

For much of history, the vast majority of language was spoken.

역사의 오랜 기간 동안 글보다는 말이 주된 부분을 차지했습니다.

But as people became more interconnected and writing gained importance,

그러나 사람끼리 보다 긴밀히 연결되고 글이 중요성을 띄어감에 따라

Interconnected: 서로 연결된

written language was standardized to allow broader communication

문어는 보다 넓은 범위의 의사소통을 실현하기 위해

and ensure that people in different parts of a realm could understand each other.

그리고 영토의 다른 곳에 사는 사람들이 서로를 이해할 수 있도록 표준화되었습니다.

In many languages, this standard form came to be considered the only proper one,

많은 언어에서 이처럼 표준화된 형식만이 적절한 것으로 인식하게 되었는데

despite being derived from just one of many spoken varieties,

사실 이것은 여러 형태의 구어들 중 하나에서 나왔을 뿐이며

usually that of the people in power.

그것은 주로 지배계층의 구어였습니다.

Language purists worked to establish and propagate this standard

언어순화론자들은 이와 같은 표준을 만들고 전파시키려 했는데

by detailing a set of rules that reflected the established grammar of their times.

그들 시대의 정립된 문법을 반영하는 일련의 규칙들을 상세히 기술했습니다

And rules for written grammar were applied to spoken language, as well.

또 문어의 규칙들이 구어에 적용되기도 했습니다.

Speech patterns that deviated from the written rules were considered corruptions,

문어의 규칙에서 벗어난 화법은 ‘타락한’ 것으로 여겨지거나

Deviated from something: ~에서 벗어나다, 빗나가다

or signs of low social status,

낮은 사회계급을 의미했으며

and many people who had grown up speaking in these ways

이런 방식으로 말하며 자라온 사람들은

were forced to adopt the standardized form.

표준화된 형식을 취하도록 강요 받았습니다.

Adopt: 선택하다, 취하다 (*adapt와 혼동하지 말 것)

More recently, however,

그러나 최근 들어서

linguists have understood that speech is a separate phenomenon from writing

언어학자들은 말하기가 글쓰기와는 별개의 현상임을 알게 되었고

with its own regularities and patterns.

고유의 질서와 패턴이 있음을 알게 되었습니다.

Most of us learn to speak at such an early age that we don't even remember it.

대부분의 사람들은 매우 어린 나이에 말하기를 배우기 때문에 이를 기억조차 하지 못하죠.

We form our spoken repertoire through unconscious habits,

우리는 무의식적인 습관을 통해 우리만의 구어목록을 만듭니다.

not memorized rules.

암기된 규칙을 통해서가 아니라요.

And because speech also uses mood and intonation for meaning,

또한 말하기는 의미 전달을 위해 분위기와 억양을 사용하기 때문에

Intonation: 억양, 어조

its structure is often more flexible,

그 구조가 보다 유연합니다.

adapting to the needs of speakers and listeners.

화자와 청자의 요구에 맞춰 변화할 수 있죠.

This could mean avoiding complex clauses that are hard to parse in real time,

즉 실시간으로 분석하기 어려운 복잡한 절들은 가급적 피하고

Parse: (문장을) 구문 해석하다, 구성 요소로 분석하다

making changes to avoid awkward pronunciation,

어색한 발음을 피하기 위해 변화를 주고

or removing sounds to make speech faster.

더 빨리 말하기 위해 음운을 제거하기도 합니다.

The linguistic approach that tries to understand and map such differences

이 같은 차이들을 이해하고 도식화하려는 언어적 접근법을

without dictating correct ones is known as descriptivism.

‘옳은 것’을 제시하지 않고 이렇게 하는 것을 기술주의라고 합니다.

Dictate: 지시하다, 명령(결정)하다

Rather than deciding how language should be used,

언어가 어떻게 사용되어야 하는지 정해주기 보다는

it describes how people actually use it,

실제 사람들이 어떻게 언어를 사용하는지를 보여주고

and tracks the innovations they come up with in the process.

그 와중에 만들어내는 혁신들을 추적합니다.

Come up with something: ~를 제안하다, 생각해 내다

But while the debate between prescriptivism and descriptivism continues,

그러나 규범문법주의와 기술주의 간의 논쟁이 계속되고 있으면서도

the two are not mutually exclusive.

그 둘은 서로 배타적인 것이 아닙니다.

At its best, prescriptivism is useful for informing people

잘 활용하면, 규범문법주의는 사람들에게 정보를 주는 데 유용합니다.

about the most common established patterns at a given point in time.

주어진 시점에 가장 널리 정립된 패턴에 대한 정보 말이죠.

This is important, not only for formal contexts,

이것은 중요합니다. 형식적 맥락에서만이 아니라

but it also makes communication easier

의사소통을 한결 쉽게 해주거든요.

between non-native speakers from different backgrounds.

서로 다른 배경을 지닌 비원어민 화자들 사이에서 말입니다.

Descriptivism, on the other hand,

다른 한편 기술주의는

gives us insight into how our minds work

우리의 정신이 어떻게 작용하는지에 대한 식견과

Insight into something: ~에 대한 이해, 식견

and the instinctive ways in which we structure our view of the world.

우리가 세상에 대한 관점을 구조화하는 직관적인 방식에 대한 식견을 제공합니다.

Ultimately, grammar is best thought of as a set of linguistic habits

마지막으로, 문법은 일련의 언어적 습관으로 볼 수 있는데

that are constantly being negotiated and reinvented by the entire group of language users.

언어 사용자 전체에 의해 끊임없이 협상되고, 재발명되는 것입니다.

Like language itself,

언어와 마찬가지로

it's a wonderful and complex fabric

문법은 경이롭고 복잡한 직물입니다.

woven through the contributions of speakers and listeners,

화자와 청자에 의해,

writers and readers,

저자와 독자,

prescriptivists and descriptivists,

규범문법주의자와 기술주의자들에 의해

from both near and far.

가까이서, 그리고 멀리서 짜인 직물입니다.
