유튭으로 배우는 영어회화

동시통역의 길은 멀고도 험난하다

In 1956, during a diplomatic reception in Moscow,

1956년, 모스코에서의 외교 만찬회 중에

Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev told Western Bloc ambassadors,

소련의 지도자인 니키타 흐루쇼프가 서방권 대사들에게 말했습니다.

Western Bloc: 서방권 (소련, 동구권 등 공산주의 국가들과 반대되는 미국, 서구권 등 자본주의 국가들)

"My vas pokhoronim!"

(러시아어) "Мы вас похоронить!"

His interpreter rendered that into English as,

그의 통역사는 그걸 영어로 이렇게 번역했습니다.

Render A into B: A를 B로 만들다 (본문에서는 영어로 만들다, 즉 번역하다)

"We will bury you!"

“우리는 당신을 묻어버릴 것이다!”

This statement sent shockwaves through the Western world,

이 발언은 서구 사회에 큰 파문을 일으켰고

Shockwave: 충격파, 충격

heightening the tension between the Soviet Union and the US

소련과 미국 사이의 긴장을 고조시켰습니다.

who were in the thick of the Cold War.

두 나라는 한창 냉전 중에 있었죠.

In the thick of something: ~가 한창인 때에

Some believe this incident alone set East/West relations back a decade.

이 사건 하나만으로 동구와 서구 간 관계가 십 년은 후퇴했다고 믿는 이들도 있습니다.

Set something back: ~를 뒤로 끌어 당기다, 퇴보시키다

As it turns out, Khrushchev's remark was translated a bit too literally.

밝혀진 바와 같이, 흐루쇼프의 발언은 다소 과하게 직역되었는데요

Literally: 말 그대로

Given the context, his words should have been rendered as,

주어진 맥락에서, 그가 한 말은 이렇게 번역 됐어야 했습니다.

"We will live to see you buried,"

“우리는 당신이 땅에 묻히는 걸 볼 때까지 살겠다.”

meaning that Communism would outlast Capitalism,

공산주의가 자본주의보다 오래 지속될 거라는 뜻인데요

Outlast something: ~보다 오래 살다, 오래 지속 되다

a less threatening comment.

좀 덜 위협적인 말이죠.

Though the intended meaning was eventually clarified,

결국 의도된 뜻이 밝혀지긴 했지만,

Clarify: ~를 명확히 하다, 분명히 하다

the initial impact of Khrushchev's apparent words

흐루쇼프가의 발언이 만들어낸 초기 파급력은

Apparent: 눈에 보이는, 겉보기에, 외관상의

put the world on a path that could have led to nuclear armageddon.

핵전쟁으로 이어졌을 수도 있는 상황에 세계를 몰아넣었습니다.

Armageddon: 대결전, 대충돌

So now, given the complexities of language and cultural exchange,

그렇다면, 언어와 문화 교류의 복잡성을 고려해 볼 때

how does this sort of thing not happen all the time?

어떻게 해서 이와 같은 일들이 늘상 일어나지는 않는 걸까요?

Much of the answer lies with the skill and training of interpreters to overcome language barriers.

해답은 언어 장벽을 극복하기 위한 통역사들의 기술과 훈련에 있습니다.

For most of history, interpretation was mainly done consecutively,

대부분의 세월 동안 통역은 주로 연속적으로 이루어져 왔습니다.

with speakers and interpreters making pauses to allow each other to speak.

화자와 통역사들이 서로가 말을 하도록 잠깐씩 멈추곤 했죠.

Make pause: 일시적으로 멈추다, 잠깐 멈추다

But after the advent of radio technology,

그러나 라디오 기술이 출현한 이후로

a new simultaneous interpretations system was developed in the wake of World War II.

새로운 동시통역 시스템이 세계 제 2차대전이 끝난 뒤에 개발되었습니다.

In the wake of something: ~여파로, ~이 있고 난 뒤에

In the simultaneous mode

자동 모드에서

interpreters instantaneously translate a speaker's words into a microphone while he speaks.

통역사들은 화자가 말을 하는 동안, 화자의 말들을 마이크에다 대고 즉시 통역을 합니다.

Without pauses, those in the audience can choose the language in which they want to follow.

대화가 정지되는 일 없이, 청중들은 그들이 듣고 싶은 언어를 선택해 들을 수 있습니다.

On the surface, it all looks seamless,

겉으로 보기에 끊김 없이 이어지는 것 같지만

On the surface: 겉보기에, 표면상으로는

Seamless: 이음매 없는, 끊긴 곳 없는

but behind the scenes,

그 이면에는

human interpreters work incessantly to ensure every idea gets across as intended.

모든 생각들이 의도한 대로 전달될 수 있도록 끊임없이 수고하는 인간 통역사가 있습니다.

And that is no easy task.

결코 쉬운 일이 아니죠.

It takes about two years of training for already fluent bilingual professionals

이미 유창하게 2개 국어를 구사하는 전문가들조차 2년 가량의 훈련이 필요합니다.

to expand their vocabulary and master the skills necessary to become a conference interpreter.

어휘력을 향상시키고, 컨퍼런스 통역사가 되기 위해 필요한 기술들을 마스터하는 데 말입니다.

To get used to the unnatural task of speaking while they listen,

들으면서 동시에 말을 하는 부자연스러운 일에 익숙해지기 위해

students shadow speakers

학생들은 화자를 따라하고

Shadow: (그림자처럼) 따라하다

and repeat their every word exactly as heard in the same language.

화자의 말 하나 하나를 같은 언어로, 들리는 대로 정확히 반복합니다.

In time, they begin to paraphrase what is said,

머지않아 그들은 화자의 말을 의역하기 시작하고

Paraphrase: 뜻을 유지한 채로 문장을 바꾸다, 의역하다

making stylistic adjustments as they go.

즉석에서 멋진 문체로 다듬기도 합니다.

At some point, a second language is introduced.

그리고 어느 순간 제 2 언어가 들어오게 되는 거죠.

Practicing in this way creates new neural pathways in the interpreter's brain,

이 방법으로 연습을 하면, 통역사의 뇌에 새로운 신경 경로가 생겨납니다.

and the constant effort of reformulation gradually becomes second nature.

그리고 문장 재구성을 위한 끊임없는 노력은 거의 본능이 되죠.

Reformulation: 재구성, 다시 형성하는 것

Second nature: 제2의 천성

Over time and through much hard work,

시간과 노력을 거치면

the interpreter masters a vast array of tricks to keep up with speed,

통역사는 여러가지 일련의 요령들을 터득하게 되는데, 속도를 맞추고

Array: 대열, 일련(의)

deal with challenging terminology,

어려운 용어를 처리하며,

and handle a multitude of foreign accents.

다양한 외국 억양을 다루는 것들이죠.

They may resort to acronyms to shorten long names,

긴 이름을 줄이기 위해 두문자를 활용하고

Acronym: 두문자. 글자의 첫머리만 따서 말을 줄이는 것.

choose generic terms over specific,

특수한 용어보다는 일반적인 용어를 사용하며

Generic: 일반적인, 포괄적인. (브랜드 없이 일반 명칭으로 판매되는 상품을 generic brand라고도 함)

or refer to slides and other visual aides.

또는 슬라이드나 다른 시각자료를 가리킬 수도 있습니다.

They can even leave a term in the original language,

심지어 외국어의 용어를 (번역하지 않고) 그대로 두기도 하는데

while they search for the most accurate equivalent.

그 동안 가장 정확한 번역을 찾아 봅니다.

Interpreters are also skilled at keeping aplomb in the face of chaos.

통역사는 또한 혼돈 속에서 침착을 유지하는 데 능한데요

Aplomb: 침착, 태연

In the face of ....: ~속에서

Remember, they have no control over who is going to say what,

그들은 누가 무엇을 말할지를 통제할 수 없으며

or how articulate the speaker will sound.

화자가 얼마나 또박또박 말할 것인지도 모릅니다.

A curveball can be thrown at any time.

변화구는 어느 순간에나 던져질 수 있죠.

(예상치 못한 일이 일어날 수 있다는 뜻)

Curveball: 변화구(커브볼)

Also, they often perform to thousands of people

또한 그들은 수천 명의 사람들 앞에서,

and in very intimidating settings, like the UN General Assembly.

그리고 UN 총회와 같은 매우 살 떨리는 상황에서 통역을 하기도 합니다.

To keep their emotions in check,

감정을 통제하기 위해

Keep something in check: ~를 통제하다, 제어하다

they carefully prepare for an assignment,

그들은 임무를 매우 신중하게 준비하는데요

building glossaries in advance,

용어사전을 미리 만들어 놓고

reading voraciously about the subject matter,

주요 안건에 대해 닥치는 대로 찾아 읽고

Voraciously: 게걸스레, 열심으로

and reviewing previous talks on the topic.

주제에 대한 예전 회담들도 찾아 봅니다.

Finally, interpreters work in pairs.

마지막으로, 통역사는 짝을 지어 일합니다.

While one colleague is busy translating incoming speeches in real time,

한 명이 실시간으로 진행되는 발언들을 통역하느라 바쁠 때

the other gives support by locating documents,

다른 한 명은 그를 지원합니다. 문서를 찾아주고,

looking up words, and tracking down pertinent information.

단어 뜻을 찾고, 관련 정보를 추적해내는 식이죠.

Pertinent: 적합한, 적절한, 관련된

Because simultaneous interpretation requires intense concentration,

동시 통역은 고도의 집중이 필요하기 때문에

every 30 minutes, the pair switches roles.

30분 마다 파트너끼리 역할을 바꿉니다.

Success is heavily dependent on skillful collaboration.

성공은 전적으로 숙련된 협동에 달려있죠.

Language is complex,

언어는 복잡하고,

and when abstract or nuanced concepts get lost in translation,

추상적이거나 미묘한 뉘앙스의 개념이 제대로 번역되지 않으면

Nuanced: 미묘한 차이가 있는

the consequences may be catastrophic.

아주 참혹한 결과가 나올 수 있습니다.

As Margaret Atwood famously noted, "War is what happens when language fails."

마가렛 애트우드의 유명한 말이 있죠. “전쟁은 언어가 실패할 때 일어나는 것이다.”

Conference interpreters of all people are aware of that

컨퍼런스 통역사들은 이를 잘 알고 있고

and work diligently behind the scenes to make sure it never does.

언어가 실패하지 않도록 보이지 않는 곳에서 부지런히 일하고 있습니다.

Diligently: 부지런히, 열심히
