Sears is dying, “fast fashion” is thriving

1230_zara.jpg

Sears , which once revolutionized American retail with its catalogues and  big box stores , has now been given a $200m  credit line  to make its last days more bearable.

CEO Eddie Lampert has secured the loan through his own hedge fund, in a move that seems more sentimental than strategic.

Not a great sign when your own CEO is the only one who’s not ready to  let go , particularly right after the typically life-giving holiday season.

It’s not lookin’ good, doc

Let’s go to the charts: Since 2006, the average decline of  brick and mortar  retail market value was 53% (excluding Walmart), but Sears alone is bringing down the average with a  whopping  95% loss in value.

Sears Holdings Corp. lost $748m last quarter, bringing losses to $9.35B in the past eight years. And unfortunately, it’s showing no signs of recovery.

The company is now considering selling off notable brands Kenmore and Craftsman to get  leaner , which is kind of like  amputating  your legs to win a running race.

brick and mortar retail :

But, it’s all in  the circle of shelf-life

As one revolutionary retailer moves on to the big warehouse in the sky, another is  primed to   take its place .

Because, unlike the bulky brick and mortars of  yore , Spanish “fast-fashion” company Zara  hangs its hat on the ability to adapt and respond to customer tastes nearly in real-time.

Heck, one of their items takes just 25 days to go from concept to reaching actual customers.

the circle of (shelf) life :
primed to V : "prime"을 동사로 쓰면 "사용/작동할 수 있게 준비하다"라는 영어표현이 되요. be primed to do something하면 "~할 수 있게 준비되있다" 라고 해석할 수 있겠죠:?
 hang one's hat on something : "~에 의존하다/depend on something"을 뜻하는 영어표현이에요!
e,g. The company's earnings were up 70% last year, but I don't think you can hang your hat on that kind of growth.

As Pablo Isla, CEO of Zara’s parent company puts it…

“The idea has been to understand what the customer wants first and then have an integrated manufacturing and logistics system to be able to deliver it to them quickly,”

That means keeping production central to Spain and nearby countries, and making creative decisions in less than 24 hours from quick discussions, rather than formal meetings.

Long story short  (and to put it in terms of  a foot race) if Zara is the Usain Bolt of retail, Sears is, um… this kid dying on the first  hurdle .

to put it in terms of something :
e.g. To put it in laymen's term, it means "near death".

  3. How is department store in Korea different from that of the US?
